Same Great Classes
Going Green: Starting with this Summer Term, you may have received a “We Are Going Green” postcard at your home alerting you to some changes we are making to do our part in conserving resources and saving energy. We are no longer printing the Broward Educator, a 40-page tabloid publication that was sent to residents every term. Instead, we now:
- print a condensed class Schedule available at our schools and on our website,
- promote our classes on various radio and television stations and billboards,
- utilize technology in every way we can, including texting, email blasts, and Enewsletters, and
- are increasing our presentations to community, business, cultural, and social organizations on the hundreds of classes we offer to meet the diverse learning needs of our community.

BCS People and Events in the News
Extraordinary Volunteers: Two volunteers at Broward Community Schools will be honored for their outstanding contributions to students. Here are what students and staff had to say about
Ms. Regina Santiago at Fort Lauderdale High Community School Annex: “Regina is the embodiment of love, caring, and international sophistication. Her volunteerism over the past year through her magnificent manner has served our adult population through powerful, experienced support in every sense and situation.”
Regina was actually a student at the Annex in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes and wanted to share her passion for education. Her dedication is so impressive that she was hired recently as a teacher assistant at the school.
At Nova Community School,
Mr. Jim Temples is admired by all. Students love his enthusiasm and commitment. Jim is known for never missing a day. His willingness to help students and teachers with any task, big or small is appreciated and noticed by all. His enthusiasm is contagious.
Moreover, Jim is credited for helping numerous adult students achieve their dream of earning a high school diploma because of his personal involvement, caring, and motivation. Because of Jim, these students are now moving ahead and seeing the results of their efforts.
Our volunteers will be publicly recognized May 21 at the Ninth Annual Volunteer Broward Heart of the Community Volunteer Recognition Event.
Making a Difference:
Ms. Carol Mendelson, Assistant Principal, Nova and Tequesta Trace Community Schools, in conjunction with our North Central Area office, spearheaded a series of “Free the Children” fundraisers throughout Broward Community Schools. The Free the Children organization is dedicated to helping build schools throughout the world. Teachers, students and administrators throughout our schools conducted collection drives, partnered with local restaurants, held car washes, and made a difference.

Thanks to these efforts, North Central Area raised more than $93,000.00 for Free the Children. As a result of this contribution, numerous schools will be built.
These efforts not only raised money, but also raised awareness, empathy, and created a greater sense of community.
Improving Lives, One by One. Kudos to
Mr. Michael Shortt, Adult Basic Education and General Education Development (ABE/GED) teacher at Nova and Tequesta Trace Community Schools for his superb accomplishments. This past term, Michael had the pleasure of assisting students who received 72 literacy completion points in one term. To be promoted to higher levels, these students had to pass literacy proficiency tests. For many students, this was a significant accomplishment and the motivation they needed to continue their education.
