If you want to continue your education, it’s likely that you’ll need a high school diploma or a GED. At Broward Community Schools we can help you learn more about your options and we’ll even help you attain a GED. You can attend some schools without one, but you may be limited in your options. Here’s what you need to know.

Ways to Attend School Without a GED or Diploma

Some schools and programs do not require a high school diploma or GED. These will let you enroll even without the equivalent of a high school education. This can apply to some vocational and trade schools as well. If you do some research, you may be able to find educational opportunities in your area that don’t require a diploma or GED.

Vocational & Trade Schools

Some trade and vocational programs offer training in fields such as automotive repair, culinary arts, cosmetology, construction, and information technology without requiring a diploma or GED. Requirements differ by school, so it’s best to check with individual programs to see what they accept and what skills or assessments they may require.

Individual or Non‑Credit Classes

There are also individual classes that you might be able to take. While these would not be complete programs, they could later be counted if you were to enroll in school full- or part-time. Many community colleges and adult education centers offer non-credit or continuing education courses that allow you to start learning immediatelyThese courses can help you build skills, explore different career paths, and potentially apply those credits toward a program later on if you choose to pursue a diploma or GED.

Nontraditional Learners

Finally, some schools allow learners with some high school education to enroll even if they do not have their diploma. Usually these are students who have been out of school for a few years and are referred to as “nontraditional learners.” Some colleges have alternative admissions pathways designed specifically for adults who have work experience or partial high school credits. These programs evaluate learners based on life experience, employment history, or previously earned high school coursework—making it possible to start certain programs even without a completed diploma.

Why a GED Matters

If you find that your options are limited, then seriously consider getting your GED. A GED can open the door to a variety of educational opportunities, so it’s a wise idea to take the test whether you’re thinking about community college, trade school or four-year college.

With a GED, students gain access to financial aid, certificate programs, community college pathways, and in many cases, four‑year degree programs. It also strengthens employment opportunities, since many employers require proof of high school completion or its equivalent.
